Roofing in St. Paul & Ramsey County

St. Paul is a city of history, and history sits right on the roofline. From Summit Avenue’s Victorians to the bungalows of Highland Park and the ramblers of Roseville, the capital city’s roofs reward experience, respect for the original home, and steep-slope skill. Right Away Construction has brought all three for 30+ years.

St. Paul roofs carry a lot of history

More than almost anywhere in Minnesota, St. Paul’s housing is old and ornate. Summit Avenue holds one of the longest preserved stretches of Victorian homes in the country; the Hill District, Cathedral Hill, and Historic Hill neighborhoods are full of steep, complex roofs, many originally slate or built to carry it. Along the Mississippi bluffs in Highland Park and the West Side, homes face wind and sun exposure that a sheltered street never sees.

These roofs don’t forgive shortcuts. Steep pitches demand real safety and technique; historic homes demand materials and detailing that suit the house; and every roof in Ramsey County still takes the same Minnesota hail, wind, and freeze–thaw ice dams as the rest of the metro. We roof for all of it.

Roof Inspection

Storm, hail & insurance

Ramsey County sees the same spring hail and summer wind as its neighbors, and an aging roof can lose years to a single storm without ever springing an obvious leak. We inspect honestly, document damage for your carrier, and guide the claim ethically with the single focus of restoring the roof, never inflating the claim. See our storm & insurance process →

St. Paul neighborhoods we serve

Across Ramsey County

Ramsey is Minnesota’s smallest and most densely built county. We roof its suburbs as readily as the capital city:

Historic homes, slate & steep roofs

A Summit Avenue roof and a Roseville rambler are two different crafts.  This is where we owe you our most honest answer on the whole page.

We work on historic homes in every one of St. Paul’s historic districts, and we install roofing that can be approved in those districts: synthetic slate, cedar shake, stone-coated steel, architectural shingle profiles that suit a period home, and modern slate (synthetic and newly quarried natural slate), installed and replaced with modern, up-to-code methods. When a homeowner wants to replace once and never worry again, we install the full lifetime category. Explore Lifetime Roofs – synthetic slate & metal →

What we don’t do: repair or renovate original, historic slate roofs. Josh and Lewis have both done slate roofing, but keeping a century-old slate roof alive is a dedicated specialist’s craft, and you deserve someone who does exactly that all day. If that’s your roof, we’ll tell you straight and recommend interviewing (and getting referrals for) local classic-slate roofers rather than pretending it’s our lane.

We do perform certain kinds of maintenance on other classic roof systems, and we’re always glad to look at a historic roof and tell you which kind of help it needs, and from whom.

Permits, code & historic districts

Roofing in St. Paul is permitted and inspected through the city’s Department of Safety and Inspections, and homes in designated historic districts (like the West Summit Avenue and Historic Hill districts) may require Heritage Preservation Commission review of materials. We handle the permit and the inspection, and we know when a project needs historic-appropriate, district-approvable materials; this way, your roof is correct and approved.
